That's intentional. If you were to delete the first post of a thread, it would make the first person to reply the thread author.
A user shouldn't become the thread author if they didn't create it. It would also remove the original thread message so who knows what the thread is about? It would essentially be a bug.

Ah, OK, that does make sense. In my situation I have a forum section that is strictly to post sales and good deals. When the sales date is past I go in and delete any sales posts that are no longer valid. I deleted the first and lost the whole thread. Would putting a sticky as the first post help to eliminate that problem?
Thanks!

No, a sticky just makes the thread appear at the top of the thread listings.
You may want to look at a trash-can so you can at least move the thread back though. Or, start un-approving (I know there is a term for it but not sure if what I'm using the right one
) the posts as then they wouldn't be visible to anyone but staff and not deleted either.

You could just manually move all the old sale threads into an archive forum. One that only your Mods can see.

This is just one thread with posts for each sale. Not multiple threads.

Then shouldn't the 1st post just be an information post? About the rules & conducts on using the thread?
Because if you did just that, the 1st post would never have to be deleted.

Seems that when I delete the first message in a thread the whole thread disappears.

That's how it's supposed to work. Generally for a discussion, you want to have the opening post to start it off and get people understanding the topic of the thread and stuff.
