I've never copied and pasted files when I restored my databases???

All you do is;

Just create new user
new password
new database
upload database to newly created one
change config file to point to new database details

thats it.
FooFighter you got it in one.

I'm having a real problem with this. I followed the steps, problem is there is no config file in the backup of the database.

Just install Mybb like you normally would do and after the installation process is over, go to myphpadmin and you can either:

Erase all tables on the database you used and upload your backup file by importing it
or
Create a new database with your backup and change your Database Name in inc/config.php
Did the first part, then got an another error:

Error Type:
MyBB Error (42)
Error Message:
Your board has not yet been upgraded. Please do so before attempting to browse it.

I'll try again.Sad
That means you need to unlock the install folder (delete /install/lock) and run upgrade.php. Make sure you upload 1.6.8 first.
Now I get the same problem from last week, the board is updated and there is an issue with the URL, the IP address comes up instead of http://marcstevens.net/board we get http://50.97.104.108/~marcstev/board/ and now we can't log in again.

Any ideas?

I can load your forum page fine.

P.s. Did you check the board url and the cookie settings to make sure that they are as they should. Because if the backup you restored was restored to a different forum folder name/url then the above things I mentioned above should be straightened out as well.
