Please add Social media sharing buttons in MyBB 2.0

Why? You can easily add them via a template edit or plugin. I see no need for it to be core personally as I've yet to use them anywhere or see any body use them on my own sites.

Maybe an on and off button for this feature the default being off

Agreed, especially since there are so many different ways you could do this. Would there be an option to share each post? thread? like the entire site? Which social networks would be included? Since there are literally hundreds of them.

This is definitely something best left for a plugin.

You could use Add This.

Better to use a plugin for such functionality and others like social login etc. Try Addthis, loginradius.com, gigya and others

Sounds like a good idea, good for communitys etc.
With a feature to turn it on/off should be perfect.
