There's an on-going tour on the blog which shows the new features of 1.8. A new blog post should be coming soon providing even more information.

Plugins should work just fine. Themes will most likely need some work to get them working with 1.8. 1.8 is a larger upgrade to the 1.x series than 1.6 was.

@anori - I laughed so hard at that. What we could do to have some fun is make a hidden docs page for "When it's ready". Then, when the staff post, the parser links to the page. Hahahaha.
