As the title says, can someone lead me into the right direction as to how to modify the memberlist to allow for usergroups as a category and to allow for sorting by usergroup?

Well there's no option by default to do this, you might have to use a plugin (if any).

Post a request in in this forum if you cant find anything suitable on the MyBB Mods Site or the MyBBSource Modifications Store

I ended up just linking to the forum team page which did exactly what I needed to do.
