I would like to block all posting in my parent forums and only allow posts in the sub forums. What is the best way to do this? I tried not allowing posting from forum permissions but it seems misleading when a user gets the standard "you are not allowed to post here" message. Is there a better way to do it?

You would need a plugin to redirect users once they click on forum's newthread button to subforum's new thread page. There is no plugin for this AFAIK.
