I once searched Google and was directed to a forum post that required me to register in order to read. This seemed like a great way to build membership while restricting access to certain sensitive information (like the location of good fishing spots).

It was this forum:
http://www.kawarthaanglers.com/forum/

I'm dying to do this with my own forum. From what I could tell, I would set custom user permissions for Googlebot.

This is probrably against Google TOS, which requires Googlebot to be treated like any other user and not something special.

Still, I am wondering how I would implement this. I have loads of great content in closed forums that I would love to be able to index!!!!
I don't know if this is what you are looking for but there is a plug-in but I think it would have all forums that way, so guests can see threads and not enter posts, not sure.

Or this is what I used for a couple years..and had to make another permission for my crawler bots but it really did the trick

Make a new user group called bots and give it extra permissions than guest and then assign Google or any other bot you want to that group.

Thank-you. How do I assign Google or any bot to that group?
ACP -> Configuration -> Spiders / Bots -> <bot> -> Edit -> User Group

Please refer to Config Spiders.
Fantastic thank-you! I noticed when I create a new user group, there is no option to inherit permissions from the "gues" usergroup...

?
Yes, you cannot inhered permissions from the "Guest" group, you will need to do so manually.
