is there a way to set newly activated users to default to a custom user group instead of "Registered" ? I'd like to put all new members into a "Newbie" group that has automatic promotion to registered after 5 posts. This would give me the ability to lock down new member priviledges until they have had a chance to show that they aren't spammers - while eliminating the need for a bunch of mods that may or may not work the next time I upgrade my board.

Add a new Group Promotion and set the Post Count option to greater than 5 posts. Select Registered as the old group, and select "Newbie" as the new group. Be sure the change type is 'Primary User Group'.

yes, what beacon said is correct. It should work but If you want everybody to have it, shouldn't you just make it 0 posts? just a thought.
