I found hundreds spam posts overnight by one username, to many different threads. And within a thread, there are repeating posts. No doubt this is done by some spam software. But how to prevent from populating them?

Maybe use one of the various spam prevention plugins available.
Personal vote would go to registration question Spamalyser or stop forum spam.
