Only tips i could give would be:
  • Contest are a great way to get people to sign up to your site. While this of course doesnt work for every niche, it is certainly a great option for others. Forcing your users to join to participate in the contest will draw them in. Especially if the rewards are good enough.
  • Make registration as easy as possible, unless you know people will sign up to your website for certain content (and dont really care how hard it is to get their). What i mean by this is give users the options to register in 1 button click preferable.
If users have to fill in tons of information they generally just dont especially not if they can view the content. Then they wont feel the need to go through a difficult registration proccess. A great way to make it easier is simply offer options to sign up using:
    • twitter
    • facebook
    • google account
    • etc.

So anything like openID formats that are easy to use and work accros many websites.
    http://janrain.com/
Is for example a great tool for this.
  • Cheesy answer, have something people want to invest in. A average user just doesnt have the time to spend x hours on one forum and x on another. So generally the time they invest must be worth it to them.
If they think it would be worth it people will sign up and start posting.

Mostly cheesy answers.. but their is simply no "golden formula" to this question. Otherwise you would see everybody doing the same thing.
Simply keep it to three rules:

"Registration needs to be easy"
"Users need to have content offered to them that they wish to invest their own time into"
"You need to gain an active community"
Thanks...good info!
