I'm new to all of this ... I have mySQL and PHP installed on a private server.
I'm going through the MYBB install, and get to the database configuration page.
Have no idea what to put in for username/password/database name for mySQL.
Do I need to setup stuff there first?

That is the screen I'm up to ... not sure what the cPanel is?
I'm not on a hosted service ... I own my own servers and have our own T1 ... I'm just not familiar with mySQL to know how to set that up to work with myBB ...

Well, I haven't used any mySQL projects till now. So this is new to me ... I got the mysql setup ... now configuring the rest of Mybb
One problem so far, I can login, but when it "returns" to the previous page it says I'm not login'd in and wants me to login again.
You need to configure your cookie path and cookie domain based on your forum URL.
You can find the two settings in your Admin CP (append /admin/ to your forum URL) under Settings > Manage > General Configuration (Cookie Domain & Cookie Path).
Example settings if your forum URL was
http://www.example.com/forums/
Cookie domain: .example.com
Cookie path: /forums/
