Might be an inspiration as well as a proof that it's possible. I think it relies on the central repository of WordPress plugins that contains version information in machine-readable format.

So, in actual fact, this has got nothing to do with security.

You could probably do it for plugins and core but we don't provide a check for themes.

What do you mean by this? Isn't running unpatched software the most common reason for getting hacked?

I think what we are trying to tell you is that your question is not related to whether or not MyBB provides patches etc, but that you want a "more convenient way" of getting your updates/information. We have given you the options available to get that information.
