Here at the mybb community forums, it automatically prepends http://

has this always happened?

Not happening for me, but if you mean copying directly from the browser like firefox/ chrome.
It shows up in the address bar as
www.mybb.com but when you paste it its
http://www.mybb.com/. Maybe that is it?

ftp can easily be a subdomain which stands for "Forest Tree Pictures".
The FTP protocol is parsed just fine within MyBB.

We can't assume that every webserver is using the subdomain ftp as their File Transfer Protocol host.
