I have searched on this site in the various forums, but I cannot find a quick answer to this.

I make a forum category and assign a password to it. The subforums in this category do not inheirit the password of their category or parent forum. Correct?

Each forum has to have a separate password? Correct?

Is it possible to make a forum or category with subforums and have a single password for it that only needs to be changed in one place?

Sorry if this is a no-brainer but I have been trying to work this out for a couple of days, and I feel like I am either missing something obvious or you do need to have each forum restricted with a separate password.

In the current way the system is designed, you would have to modify some of the files to get passwords from the parent category. Currently you have to assign each forum it's own password. There is no quick fix for this that I'm am aware of.
