It is quite strange: I copied the mybb folder mathtoc from server to my macbook's webdocument root so the url is http://amac/mathtoc, and then replicated the forum data to the laptop mysql server.

I did changed the dbdata about cookiepath etc and so using safari or firefox I can login to the dev copy of the forum without problem. But even I cleaned up all the browsing data and history, I can never login to the dev copy of the forum: It always said the login is successful and then 'loged off me' right away.

What the problem it can be?

I'm not sure if the browser specific issue is covered there. As I said, it's strange that safari and firefox worked just fine.

But the same chrome talked to the real server (with registered domain) is fine. And the same browser not even happy with a fresh installation of mybb on my laptop amac (again safari and firefox worked fine of course).

If you are hosting on a localhost (i.e. a test forum on your computer), your cookie domain will usually have to be blank.

This amazingly helped! Even one can set dev web server name as something like 'amac', in the /etc/hosts as well as httpd.conf, it is still localhost for picky browsers (like chrome). So once I changed cookiedomain value from '.amac' into '', (editing /inc/settings.php and db table ...settings with value '' for record named 'cookiedomain'), things are fixed right away!
