Would be great to have in the real release, I have managed to insert my own into the functions file, and I'd love to release the steam login plugin I wrote, but it cannot be used without modifying the files... I think it'd be nice to have for other plugins too, or even a 'display name' field instead of the standard username... could be used to add some pretty (dynamic) effects to usernames in plugins too 
Could be better to add a central function dedicated to calling the hook on unformatted names, since build_profile_link IS called with a formatted name from wherever (once or twice, mainly going to be the raw name), not from format_name either...
