That plugin uses the images postbit_rthx.gif and postbit_thx.gif for the thanks button. I'm assuming the theme you're using has defined a seperate image directory and those images aren't available.
Look in your root /images folder for the images mentioned above (or just get them from the plugin download) and move them into the themes image folder. The location of the themes image folder can be found in ACP > Templates and Style > Themes > Choose the theme > Scroll down and look for 'Image Directory'.
The reason it still says "Thanks" is probably because the image has the 'alt' attribute defined, which shows up when an image is unavailable.
