I might be missing something, but from what I can see the MyBB merge system doesn't support VB 5 (or VB 4)... so not sure how that would work?

The vB3 converter works pretty well for vB4 from past experience (or it did for 4.0.x). As for vB5, it's still in beta and has one of the strangest database schemas out there according to what I've read. I don't know if we'll ever support vB5 it's such a shambles in its current state.

Ah ok, worth a shot. Now to see if / how I can get a demo of VB4 to convert to... not sure they offer that.

I doubt they will. Your best bet is to try find somebody with an active license on an admin board somewhere who might be willing to help.
