It may sound weird to claim a company that generated $1.2 billion in revenue in the third quarter of last year (at a net loss) and boasts a billion accounts is not an elite tech company.
This is not to argue that Facebook has no value, just that we need to stop including it in the conversation with those other four. Even with strong revenue from advertising - which is under increasing scrutiny for efficacy - on the Internet being a walled garden does not build competitive strength. Remember AOL, anyone?
