Is there a way or a plugin to auto delete really old pms? say, anything over a year old, auto delete, with daily cron to check for it?
Are you suggesting this or seeking for support?
I think that a task for this would probably be a good addition to 1.8.
If you add this, be sure to include a way to exclude specific PMs.
Also be sure to have a choice to how long until pms will be auto deleted, like 80 days, 6 months, etc, and also staff, the staff on the forum have there pms deleted also?
I think it an easy task for a plugin.
Probably I'll add this to my Forum Cleaner.

I am not aware of a way to do that, and even so, that would be a huge task!
PMs in the trash can are already deleted after 30(?) days.
