I've deleted it but now the largest file of the lot has popped up again.

Those core.xxxx files are files created by PHP from misconfigured scripts. I had a similar problem with my previous vBulletin installation before I had switched to MyBB, I just contacted my host and he did something about it, not exactly sure what though.

ye that makes sense now: after all I'm having problems with something in functions.php that keeps reoccuring

Which host are you using, and what operating system, PHP version, web server software, and MySQL version are they using?

BTW, MyBB's filesize is only 2.68 Megabytes.
