I'm right there with ya on learning, Typography is a whole different art form (albeit completely connected and relevant). Personally, I'm a fan of the readability of Proxima Nova but unfortunately it's not available on Google fonts.
So I use these three which load time is fairly fast with high readability:

My biggest issue with typography is the massive amount of options. Like I have a perfect font in my head and there is just to much to dig through to find it(if it even exists). So I usually settle for something not that great in the end
