MySQL and FTP are two separate things. MySQL is a database system which stores your forum data and FTP is a protocol to transfer files between devices (i.e. your computer and the server).

I guess both Mysql & FTP have different uses. it would be a good idea to learn the difference between both.

Well, FTP is a protocol for transferring files, and MySQL is a daemon for database management. You'd of course use both if you want everything to work fine, right? FTP isn't required to use, I personally do not use it because I usually just upload ZIPs and then extract them with cPanel. But it depends on your needs and knowledge.
