I cannot locate the config.default.php within the Upload folder to modify it to config.php as the installation instructions specify.

That is not needed actually. Just CHMOD your files and start the installation.

As Jovan has said, it's unnecessary. MyBB automatically configures the file when you run through the installer.

For future reference it's located in the ./inc/ directory.
