I believe that there is a "default avatar" plugin already. that may be a good plugin to start looking at since you know how to make the code edits to do what you want, but its a good comparison of how the plugin system works and you know what the end result is supposed to be.

Well, I don't want to replace all instances of blank avatars with a default image, only the one on the welcome block. -- Everywhere else, the native mybb handling of it is fine.

...hence the conditional in the code I made.

it was just a suggestion as a starting point for understanding the plugin system. two ways to do the same thing (more or less) is a good way to learn the second method if you know the first already.
