It's not a bad idea. However, I think you need to get a few more members and posts (making an active community) before running contests that would require sponsors.
In my opinion, if you would want to run a contest at this time, you would have to provide sponsors by yourself. Truly, I see where you are coming from. However, I don't think this is the right time to ask for sponsors.

It will take time. Believe me, I don't think anyone has a sure-fire way in order to become a success in forums. Personally, I think it is a combination of the right advertising (if you can), content, and hard work. However, I think other people may be better suited to answer the question of "getting more members". I used to run a forum site, but it has been a while.
