So by default if I'm not mistaken there is a folder located at:

mybbroot/images/themename/js

Where are present some js files. My question is what is this folder for and the files within? Is it needed? Or can I just remove them?

I tried searching for an answer but didn't find any. I must be asking either a really stupid question or I didn't find it already asked on this forum.

Depends on the theme.
You should go in ACP>Templates>The templates that theme is using>Ungrouped Templates>headerinclude.
Search for any links to js files in the theme folder. You'll usually find them there and they are used for dropdown menus, resizing elements, changing colors etc. Don't remove them, as they may render the theme useless.
