I uploaded and installed a fresh MyBB. Then I uploaded the merge folder to the parent directory just as I did with the install folder. I add /merge/ to the end of the board URL, but it just takes me to the merge directory instead of beginning the merge.

Have I overlooked something?
When you say parent directory, do you mean the root?
For example: /home/public_html/forums/ and http://site.com/forums/
The merge will need to be: /home/public_html/forums/merge/ and http://site.com/forums/merge/
Thanks for the quick response. It has been years since I did a merge.

I'm using a temporary URL that worked fine for the /install/
http://bes.lunarservers.com/~rever91/site.org/merge/ (Some info altered, of course)

Yes, I meant that I put the merge folder in the root of the site.org folder, which is just below my public_html folder.

In reading the merge upload instructions, is says to keep all the files in the merge folder, which I did. But then it goes on to say to keep the structure i.e. keep admin files in a folder called admin, etc. That makes me wonder if I failed to upload something to the right place.

Here is the source of my confusion:
Things to keep in mind:

Make sure that the directory structure is kept. (ie. the files in the admin directory should be uploaded to a directory called admin, the files in the archive directory should be uploaded to a directory called archive, etc)

I found those instructions here: http://docs.mybb.com/Running_the_Merge_System.html
I had to search for that because there was no documentation in the Merge download. (which seemed a bit sub-standard for MyBB's typical quality)
Just make sure the merge folder is in the same directory as admin, inc, images, etc.
From the merge directory, I had to click 'index.php. That got me to the welcome screen.

Then I learned that I had to upload loginconvert.php to my MyBB Forums' inc/plugins folder.

Why was there not instructions in the merge download telling me this?
No idea.
