Hello,
I want to experiment with myBB. Is it possible to install myBB on my desktop, run it from the desktop and experiment with it? How to do that?

Yes it is.
Download XAMP or WAMP (There is more clients for localhost server, but i used both of this i mentioned so i am suggesting you that) and after that install MyBB. If you need some more help how to install this clients read their help documents.
