Thanks .m. this has fixed all existing users but new users are still defaulting to receive private messages as OFF.

All my new users are having to either switch on manually or i'm having to edit each new member in AdminCP and switch it on myself.

Struggling to find the solution at the moment. Any ideas buddy?

^ you can try changing code in usercp_options template

change to

<td valign="top" width="1"><input type="checkbox" checked="checked" disabled="disabled" class="checkbox" name="receivepms" id="receivepms" value="1" {$receivepmscheck} /></td>
