Was just curious as whether the merge system currently available for 1.6 will merge to a 1.8 database or whether it will be updated for 1.8, basically as a test i want to merge my old database in to a new install of 1.8.

Not yet, it is something I need to work on. However, if you are not actually merging databases, the standard upgrade process is a much better solution.

so will the 1.6 merge system work or not with a 1.8 site.

not yet it won't. Until 1.8 is stable we can't change the merge system to match it without making multiple sets of changes/releases

Like paveman said, upgrading is the best. Personally, I have tried using a 1.6 database on 1.8 and that just works fine. Also, 1.8 is in early test stages.

I am aware of that i was mearly asking the question, and anything that is done with 1.8 is strictly on a test basis i've not tried on my live board, i did duplicate the database on a test board and upgrade but, it breaks the board, obviously needs some work.
