Next to my forum pages, there is an icon like button for each forum that outlines whether there are any new posts while also providing me with the ability to mark the forum as read. In honesty it looks crap, how could I change these icons to match each section of my forum? Such as a small newspaper for the news section and so fourth.

Unfortunately I have no clue how to use this, had an extensive look through. Could you provide me with more detailed instructions for this? It's practically noob unfriendly.
Read the full xThreads documentation, it will help you a lot. Post #10 in the original thread I linked gives pretty specific instructions.
