You can figure out the database if you go to Github. In the /install/resources/mysql_db_tables.php you will see all the tables that are created.

Is version checking no longer supported?

Is there a file I can look at to see how it works? How can that check versions when there is no "codename" on the mods page?

My plugins on the mods site all use them. It should correspond with your project name.
