Hi, I wanted the communities opinion on what they think would be better for me to have. A paid shared hosting, or a free VPS?

A free VPS is most likely no good. Go paid shared.

Definitely go paid shared over free VPS. Anything free comes with severe limitations and is bound to hurt you in the long run. Quality shared hosts run environments that will outperform most free and budget virtual machines.

I know, that is just what the web host is called, tell them that.
