Instead of in a portal, or is there a portal that will display on top of page instead of on the sides? Can I have the gallery plugin display recent images in a box just below the search, member list, calendar toolbar?

which gallery plugin you are using and do you want to add the recent images box on index page only ?

Yes on index only, using ezgallery. Thanks for your quick help. I would rather use coppermine but it looks really complicated to get it working.

i use coppermine gallery and cpm fetch to display random gallery pics you can see at my forum http://lab-lovers.com
