I just woke up about an hour ago and check my email to see this just sitting there from name.com for an emergency password change notification.

Name.com recently discovered a security breach where customer account information including usernames, email addresses, and encrypted passwords and encrypted credit card account information may have been accessed by unauthorized individuals. It appears that the security breach was motivated by an attempt to gain information on a single, large commercial account at Name.com.

Name.com stores your credit card information using strong encryption and the private keys required to access that information are stored physically in a separate remote location that was not compromised. Therefore, we don't believe that your credit card information was accessed in a usable format. Additionally, your EPP codes (required for domain transfers) were unaffected as they are also stored separately. We have no evidence to suggest that your data has been used for fraudulent activities.

As a response to these developments, and as a precautionary measure, we are requiring that all customers reset their passwords before logging in. If you use your previous Name.com password in other online systems, we also strongly recommend that you change your password in each of those systems as well.

What do you guys think of this event? I have a ton of domains with name.com and seeing them hacked like this makes me rethink the safety of my account.

It makes me trust me them even more. And, if their measures are in place as they state them they already ahead of many IT companies on how they store encrypted information. I mean so what if they got your name and email address I bet even I could find those out with little effort.

Well that's the same with anyone with a brain.

I was researching the name.com breach and found out that other registrars were also hacked around the same time.

Wow I'm glad I use Name.com now... Unlike other registars.. they've informed me that all of my information is safe. Changed all my details and I'm done.

I'm also using Name.com and I don't feel like changing to other domain regsitrator.

Name.com was one of the few registrars recently targeted by a single hacking group over a specific client. Glad to see they have informed their clients and are working or have already resolved the issues.

I have domains up for renewal today and am thinking about moving to Name.com. What are their best features over others? What's the support like?

What do you want for features? I mean it's a registrar the only difference I really see between any of them features wise is they'll throw in a hide your identity thing (when people do a whois on the domain) or a SSL.

True. I don't know what I meant by that now, I guess "attributes" or "qualities" would be a better phrasing.
