^ are you trying to get user name outside MyBB forum ? if so you have to include global.php file
so that you can use main variables to get required results.
i dont make it external im customise it on welcome block member.
{$mybb->user['username']}
if it's in templates. It shows username only for members as a string.
^ oh, there was a mistake (rather blunder). it is {$mybb->user['username']}
