Is there a way (or a plugin) which allows an additional question to be asked during the registration process? Please note that this is not a security question, so pre-defined answers are not appropriate. The question will be for collection of additional information from the registrant.

you can use custom profile fields

You can use Custom Profile Field in configuration, then either make it required (default MyBB, forces everyone to fill it during registration) or use this plugin (can put in registration as not forced to fill in).
