I have figured out with some help from a friend of mine that you can add your own forum post icons that appear to the left of the forum the problem i have now is they dont disapear when a post is read like they should does anyone know how i can make this happen thanks
The template i put the images in is forumbit then forumbit_depth2_forum

I believe what you are looking for can be done based on this tutorial:

You have to make 2 types of icons, a bright one and faded one.

I have tried to do this but how do you edit the image code in your c panel i dont want to mess it up
The tutorial shows nothing, you need to edit your theme > images > your theme > on.gif/off.gif/offlock.gif and edit them.
