I don't mean the top of the forum. I mean add an image in front of the title of an individual part of the forum in the main forum list.

Example if your forum was about animals and you wanted a picture of a pig in front of the pig forum, a horse in front of the horse forum etc...

Something like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/index.php, but not for the category - for each individual forum.

is there possibly another plugin that handles this?

^ a couple of free plugins and similar guides exist at the Mods section, but I prefer above referred tutorial.
if you are a subscriber at MyBBcentral forum then a premium plugin exists there.
