In \inc\functions_search.php there is a function clean_keywords_ft(), which gives one plus:
background subscription => +background subscription
subscription background => +subscription background

and Fulltext search needs syntax (in sql):
For "all" => +background +subscription
For "any" => background subscription

Other forums have combobox or radio buttons for All/Any words (terms).
Without that, IMO, mybb should assume ALL, unless there is any advanced element OR,+,-,*,|,(,)

So that is what is produced.

The radio box approach makes this much more transparent. It is confusing otherwise.
