Is it possible to modify the akismet plugin so that it only checks posts if it contains 1 or more links rather then all posts made by new members.

Akismet will be removed in MyBB 1.8.

I've read this on a few places, but it's unclear to me why this is? Is Akismet bad? Not suited for MyBB 1.8? Conflicting with MyBB spam system? 
Some sources on the internet (https://youtu.be/R9pTDEplxB4) seem to imply that I can upload contents of 543-1227773716-akismet.zip to get it working, if I change version compatibility to "18*". I did that, but the plugin does not even show up in the plugin settings overview :/

Can anyone summarize for me?

The service itself - no (even though it was made for blogging software rather than forums). The 1.6 MyBB plugin - yes, it was quite buggy. In 1.8 you can enable Stop Forum Spam in Configuration instead.
