It's been done before. It could be replicated.
It's not a "requirement", so to speak, though. I've seen "web 2.0" designs done without them.
I think the essence of web 2.0 is clean, crisp design. It's kinda like the evolution of home interior design.... clean lines, clutter free, crisp (soothing) colors, clean palette, etc. etc.
It is very hard to get rounded edges with a fluid design I am still trying!
Care to show us how then :-P

you can do it easily with a little javascript.
I agree with DennisTT on the container background not matching. Otherwise, I like it.

It's easy to round of any container on firefox, although it doesn't round images.
