Hmm. Ok, it appears your host has disabled the mail function. You can either talk to them about enabling it or you need to find another host.

Which host is the one you are using? I think some people here have been using freehostia.com and byethost.com as their free hosts.
Are there any substitute functions with which I can replace MyBB's calls of the mail() function that allow me - either directly or through a SMTP host or somesuch host - to work around my forum host's lack/disabling of the mail() function? And how would I impliment such a substitution?
I haven't found anything like that for MyBB in the mods or on Google.
