Go to Admin CP -> Configuration -> Forum Home Options.
When you click it, look for "Subforums to show on Index listing" option and choose how many you'd like to show. In this case, you'd change it to 4.

And for columns, I think there is a way to do it with a template edit, but I'm not entirely sure. There is a plugin for that, though:
