What do the gold stars that are below a users name signify? I've searched but no luck in finding an explanation of what they mean. I have the reputation system turned off so I'm perplexed as to what they mean.

They are linked to either a Usertitle or the Usergroup a user belongs to. They are linked to for example how many posts somebody has or if they are just a regular member or a moderator/admin.
You can change the number of stars and even the star itself if you go to Admin CP -> Users & Groups -> Groups OR User Titles -> and then edit whatever one you decide to.
