I've only just noticed this, so forgive me if it's been mentioned before.

Somebody just send me a PM, which is fine. I wrote out a response and hit send. But I CAN'T send it because I'm not on their buddy list...

That seems a little weird, because I'm sure they want a reply, but I can't even tell them to add me to their buddy list... Catch-22...

Perhaps it should allow messages form those you've sent a message to.
Yeah, this is strange defiantly should be changed.
This is only when the setting buddy only messaging has been set to use in the Admin CP or the User CP equivalent has been set in the User CP.

I agree that it could be quite annoying, this could be quite a good improvement. I doubt that it will be added to 1.6 this far though it's life.
In that case, it should not allow the sender to send the original message. If the messaging is buddy list only, then why should they be able to send a message at all to a user not on their buddy list?

I was just going to suggest that. Have a check to see if they have a buddy list thing set (can't think of the feature since I don't use it Toungue). If so check if the users they are sending the PM to are on said list. If not don't send it.
It's confusing to some users. They don't realise that the person the PM can't actually reply.
Or, another option would be automatically add people to your buddy list when you PM them if you have that setting checked.
That would be quite good.

What about not letting you PM people on your ignore list.
* JordanMussi checks if this is already the case.
It isn't.

Although under closer consideration there could just be a warning message saying that a recipient can't reply, with an I understand button. Perhaps a setting to either show the error or deny the sending of the PM.

That sounds fair-- maybe a warning that PMing a person will also add that person to the user's buddy list.

Honestly I find the buddy list to be quite disappointing as-is . . . I wish there was a bit more to it.
