I need to remove the subforum on/off icons as they don't look good.

MAY be what you're after, not sure sorry. Also, to hide the 'and 2 more' and make it display the sub forums, go to configuration > forum home options > Subforums to show on Index listing > increase that.

Goto Admin CP >> Templates & Style >> Templates >> Your theme's Templates >> Forum Bit Templates >> forumbit_depth3

and remove {$statusicon}

Goto Admin CP >> settings >> Forum Home Options >> Subforums to show on Index listing

set to 0

He doesn't want to remove the entire sub forums, only the images/icons.
