New installation, mybb.1.6.10 on FreeBSD v8

Tried uploading an avatar larger than 100x100 and received the following error message:

Your avatar was unable to be resized so that it is within the required dimensions.

Does anyone know which tool MyBB using to change the image size, or why this might be failing?

Do you have the resizing avatar feature enabled in ACP? MyBB uses the default tool provided in every MyBB 1.6 release. Also, what image are you trying to upload?

Yes, I have "Automatically resize large avatars" selected which appears to be the default.

I was uploading a .jpg image.
