I've tried placing it in header / headerincludes / footer (separately,, not all at once) of the theme I'm using.

The homepage is actually site.com/forum/index.php. I've tried setting the site url in Google Analytics to site.com, site.com/forum and site.com/forum/index.php. All with the same result.

I realize I need to wait a day or two before data shows up, but Google instructions say I still can check if it's properly installed and Google is showing the code as undetected.

Any ideas?

you can put the code at the bottom of the footer template and check at the Google Analytics

yes. that's exactly what I did...still showing up as 'Tracking Not Installed'

What code did you put? You sure that you READ the google docs properly? May be they require a few hours before they can update your status?
